SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s (such as Google) unpaid results. Let’s pretend you have a company that designs amazing surfboards in South Florida. When someone goes to search “surfboards in South Florida,” you want to be in the top search results so that you get more traffic and business than your competitors. That’s why SEO is so important. Read on as we debunk common myths about search engine optimization.
#1. “I don’t need SEO. I Googled myself, and I’m in the #1 spot already.”
Well, as a matter of fact, you do need SEO. Ranking high in search engines requires an analysis of your website & current SEO strategy, a proper SEO strategy, implementation of that strategy, monitoring results, and committment to see results. The reason you see yourself in the #1 spot is most likely due to something called “Personalized Search”. Google is tailoring your results based on your location and the websites you have visited in the past, and a few other factors. For more accurate rankings, try using “incognito” mode on your browser.
#2. “I already did SEO once so I don’t need to do it again.”
Ever heard the saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day?” That applies here. Addressing your SEO strategy one time won’t get you a #1 ranking. Not only is it essential to be adding new content to your website, but search engine algorithms change ALL the time – making that one-time effort you did years ago not really relevant anymore.
#3. “Google will figure it out since my brand & website are so unique.”
We all know just how smart Google is, sometimes it appears to be reading our minds. However, adding in a bunch of different URLs and irrelevant pages to ‘help your chances’ of ranking higher isn’t really going to work because Google doesn’t work that way. No matter how unique your brand is, not applying SEO strategies to your website is detrimental.
#4. “SEO is all smoke & mirrors.”
While we wish we could perform all types of sorcery, we are definitely not magicians full of tricks. SEO is serious business! There is a great deal of effort that goes into a properly executed SEO plan – curating content, optimization of imagery, ways to improve accessibility & speed, making sure everything works on mobile devices – and that’s only a small portion of the 200 factors involved.
#5. “My social media profiles have nothing to do with my SEO rankings.”
False! Social Media activity (like Facebook or Twitter) can have significant effects on your search engine optimization results. Social activity helps address search engine discovery and indexation, as well as content distribution. The more platforms out there with your name on them that you update often (& relevantly), the better!
