Choosing the correct platform to build your website is key. This decision depends on what type of website you want and the functionality of the website.
Selling Products / E-Commerce Website:
If you need an e-commerce website, your options are between WordPress (using WooCommerce plugin), Shopify, Magento, or a number of other lesser known e-commerce platforms.
Shopify is great for businesses who need a very simple backend and are not looking to do a lot of marketing, reporting or analysis of data. You also have to stay with Shopify indefinitely if you want to keep your design and data. Shopify websites only work on that platform. The upside is that this is easy to manage product changes and customer orders.
Magento is a good platform for users who need to manage bulk products (500+ products) and customers. The downside: Unless you are well versed in web development, you will need to pay your web designer or web developer every time you need to make an edit.
WordPress/WooCommerce is the most used platform in the world. It is versatile, easy to use, easy to learn and comes with an endless amount of functionality and design options. If you can think it, we can build it. The other great part about WordPress is that you can manage and make edits yourself, without having to constantly hire the designer/developer to do it. The downside is that WordPress can be less secure than other platforms if you do not manage your website properly. There are regular updates that need to be done to keep your site secure. These can be done with a simple click, but many people forget about them.
Simple Informative Website:
If your goal is simply to inform users about your business or product, then WordPress should be your choice in platforms. As mentioned above, it is simple to use and cheaper to build than custom sites.
If you do not have the money to pay a web designer or web developer to build your website, then I would suggest using a platform like Squarespace. This offers a one-stop shop for websites, hosting, and will walk you through building your website. There are other websites that do this too, like Wix.com, but Squarespace offers much nicer, more modern design templates.
